If you have ever wanted to write stories either of your own life, or others, or simply make them up, this is the place to come!

Writing Memoirs/Life Writing

Have you ever wanted to write about events in your life? It needn’t be your entire life; it may be about your childhood, a holiday or a journey, or someone special you met. Perhaps you are inspired by events that have happened to members of your family? Or perhaps someone in the family is a source of inspiration? Perhaps you yourself lived through an important historical moment? Everyone has stories to tell and these workshops will give you the opportunity to learn how to tell them. We will practise how to describe places and people, how to structure and how to use different narrative techniques. In each workshop we will look at short extracts of published memoirs, do short writing exercises and discuss aspects of writing. At the end of each workshop you will be welcome to submit up to 500 words for some feedback for the next time. Treat erectile dysfunction with cialis online.

Writing Fiction

Striving to tell the truth is one thing, but writing fiction is a legitimate form of making things up! Of course, it must be believable and in these workshops we will look at how to make fiction convincing, how to create three-dimensional characters, how to plot without it seeming contrived, the importance of research, how to use the senses in order to create a place the reader can visualise, and how to narrate. We will also consider sources of inspiration, starting points for writing, the importance of observing and listening, and practise narrative techniques such as ‘show’ not ‘tell’. In each workshop we will look at short extracts of fiction, do short writing exercises and discuss the craft of writing fiction. At the end of each workshop you will be welcome to submit up to 500 words for some feedback for the next time.

Creative Writing Courses, Algarve

Writing short fiction course - Please note these courses are currently not available.

'First, find out what your character wants. Then just follow him.' Ray Bradbury

Introductory five-week course on writing the short story. Workshops held weekly on Wednesdays between 2.00 - 4.30pm (including a 20 min. coffee break) at Casa Mira Montanha.

Writing can be fun and immensely rewarding - albeit not as easy as it seems! The main aim of the course is to encourage you to write fiction, to enjoy it and to continue writing. It is both for beginning writers and for those who have written fiction (or other forms) but not in a sustained way. During the course we will consider different sources as ideas for stories, encourage you to keep a notebook, to observe and listen as well as to use the imagination and memory. We will study a couple of published short stories (these will be provided) and focus on specific writing skills such as how to create a character, write dialogue, description, develop a plot, 'show, not tell' and introduce different forms of narration.

At the end of the course, you may submit your short story (of up to 2000 words) for written feedback.

Course Structure: The 5 x 2.5 hour workshops will include class exercises, discussions and weekly assignments. We will analyse a couple of published short stories and extracts as well as share work in class.

Dates for 2010: (To be announced. Please get in touch if you are interested.)

Cost: 120 Euros (including handouts, a copy of The Writing Fiction Workbook and end of course written feedback)

Place: Casa Mira Montanha, Chilrão

Places must be booked and paid for in advance. Class sizes are between 4 - 6 students (a minimum of 4 students are needed for a course to run.)

Getting to Casa Mira Montanha, Chilrão  -  From the main road that links Monchique (Nave) and Aljezur, follow the sign to Portela da Viuva, Pe do Frio and Chilrão (turn right from Casais or left from Marmelete). It is an 8 - 10 minute drive on a good tarmac road. When you reach Chilrão, turn left towards Selão and Casa Mira Montanha is on your left.

One to one tuition, based around your individual needs as a writer, is also available. An initial tutorial to determine your aims is offered free of charge. Thereafter, the cost is 25 euros per hour. An hour a week is recommended but you may choose to have as many or as few sessions as you want. You may submit up to 2,000 words for discussion each session.
